Across Narok County, and in rural communities throughout Kenya, water collection is rarely a shared burden. It falls disproportionately on women and girls. In Isintin Olkinyei Village, this is no exception, and the consequences reach far beyond the walk itself.
In households without nearby access to clean water, it is most often women and girls who take on the daily responsibility of fetching it frequently walking several hours round-trip, sometimes more than once a day. This labor, while essential, comes at a steep and often invisible cost. Girls who might otherwise be in school lose valuable class time, or drop out entirely, to help meet household water needs.
Women lose hours that could go toward income generating activities, rest, or participation in community and family life. Over time, this daily demand reinforces a cycle that limits educational attainment and economic opportunity for women and girls specifically even as the whole community bears the broader impact of water scarcity.
The Solution
By bringing a reliable, solar-powered borehole directly into Isintin Olkinyei Village, the InsytH2o project aims to return something often overlooked in water access conversations: time. Time that can go back into girls’ education. Time that can support women’s participation in economic activity, whether through small trade, agriculture, or livestock care. Time that can simply be spent building a stronger family and community life, rather than walking for water.
