Introduction
In Isintin Olkinyei Village, nestled within Siana Ward in Narok West Sub-County, water is not something that simply flows from a tap. For generations, families here many of them Maasai pastoralist households have relied on distant, often unreliable water sources to meet their most basic daily needs. This is a story about what could change, and why it matters.
The Problem
Every day, women and children in Isintin Olkinyei Village walk long distances, sometimes for hours to fetch water that is frequently unsafe to drink. This water, often drawn from shared surface sources, exposes families to waterborne illnesses like typhoid and diarrheal disease, particularly dangerous for young children and the elderly.
Beyond the health risks, the time lost to this daily task carries its own cost: children arrive late to school or miss it altogether, and adults lose hours that could otherwise go toward farming, livestock, or income generating work. In a region where livelihoods are already closely tied to the rhythms of the land and the availability of water, this daily struggle touches nearly every part of community life.
The Solution
The InsytH2o project proposes a direct, sustainable response: the development of a deep, solar-powered borehole system built specifically to serve Isintin Olkinyei Village and the surrounding Siana Ward community. Unlike diesel-powered alternatives, a solar-powered system offers long-term reliability without recurring fuel costs or dependence on an unpredictable power grid , a critical consideration for a rural, off-grid setting like the Maasai Mara region.
Once complete, this borehole will provide a safe, consistent water source close to home, reducing the time and risk currently associated with water collection. But we cannot do this alone. This project exists at the proposal stage, and its success depends entirely on the generosity of donors who believe, as we do, that reliable clean water is not a luxury, it is a foundation for everything else a community hopes to build.
